I had a clueless boss once, and I pretty much kept him propped up and looking good for a few years. My strategy was to get on his good side, and milk my position for everything I could get out of it. He allowed me to push my leadership further and further (remember, I was still making HIM look good). When the time was right, I had accumulated a great pile of experience and relationship and I ended up leapfrogging him to a much better position. He begged me to stay, of course. I have no idea what happened to him, but whatever it was, he deserved it!

Thanks for a post grounded in real-life.
