College Brand Preferences

Anderson Analytics’ third annual fall brand survey of college students bears some interesting highlights — the first of which is there appears to be lots of room for lots of brand favorites.

Most of the top brand preferences for college students don’t break into double digits.

Most of the top brand preferences for college students don’t break into double digits.

Favorite celebrity Johnny Depp was identified by fewer than 4% of 18-24 year-olds.
Favorite TV show, Grey’s Anatomy was identified by just over 7%.
And so it goes...

  • Favorite clothing brand: Old Navy (6.9%)
  • Favorite magazine: Cosmopolitan (5.5%)
  • Favorite band: Linkin Park (1.7%)

Even among brands that break out of single digits, the numbers are not commanding.

Number one…

  • Website: Facebook (12.2%)
  • Fast Food: Taco Bell (12.5%)
  • Soft Drink: Coca Cola (17.1%)

The only truly dominant brand among college students appears* to be the Apple iPod, identified by more than 65%. The number two music player (Creative) polled at five percent.

Lesson learned: There’s lots of room for brands to gain a share with young consumers. So... what’re we waiting for?

*I say appears because Anderson hasn’t released all the data yet. Stay tuned for more...
