Bernard,

Thanks for the article. This was truly an illuminating read for me.

My answer to your question "what should we do about this?" is that we need to have the older generation who will allow for failure in the younger generation and guide them through failure by helping them see why they failed and how they can grow.

I agree that failure is a necessary ingredient for growth, but simply the experience of failing is not enough. Failure left to itself is very damaging and confusing. If a young person fails and doesn't know WHY he/she fails, he cannot grow from the experience.

We need to have an older generation who will allow for failure, and then reach out and provide evaluated experience for that failure.

Compassionate, evaluated experience needs to replace dictated experience.

Agree, agree and agree with most everyone,

This is my first time on this site.

I second Ms. Yau's enthusiasm in getting parents the real education in allowing them to think rather than to follow!

From this north-of-60 head, and from what I have observed as their product, my suggestion to parents would be to pull them from public school. And I speak as a public school grad (high and state college).

We are about to launch a fledgling ministry to believers in business...www.TentmakersNetwork.org (not ready for prime time but my tech guy insisted that if we go live, I would 'be encouraged' to write content!). Much of the woes of the Christian business owner, yea verily, every business owner, is that they have to SHOW folks a step-by-step thinking process in order to be valuable for the business. This says nothing about entrepreneurship!

I spent a few years volunteering with SCORE (ok, refrain from the catcalls, I know it leaves a lot to be desired!) and you may be amazed at the number of people who want to launch a business, and don't get it. to wit, "I've had my restaurant open downtown for six weeks and my business hasn't grown."

SCORE guy (me): What are you doing to help people find you?

New Entrepreneur: What? We're right over there in plain sight. Everyone can see that! You're not talking about advertising are you? I'm sponsoring a Little League team and it hasn't helped.

We really need you folks' knowledge in an educational package in the marketplace!

Best regards,
Steve

Bernard -
I'd add that patience is a major issue here. There is mounting pressure that I can remember from as early as middle school (1995-1997 for me), that immediacy was rewarded, and slow pace was looked down on.

The urgency of "NOW!" requires that failure be side-stepped. Failure sets you back.

I think a resurgence of patience and character endurance and development are important steps toward truly greater individuals, communities, businesses, nations - and for those willing to think big enough - a greater world of people.
