The time when advertising can pass for marketing is over. It will not be missed (unless you’re in the business of selling advertising). These days, marketing is a coherent story about people, products and relationships.
Responding to reviews of his new book, All Marketers Are Liars, Seth Godin proposes a list of 30 things all good marketers know these days.
It’s not a bad list, whether you market Macintosh Widgets or dairy products.
Our five favorite entries (today at least)…
- Making promises and keeping them is a great way to build a brand.
- People are selfish, lazy, uninformed and impatient. Start with that and you’ll be pleasantly surprised by what you find.
- Effective stories match the worldview of the people you are telling the story to.
- Living and breathing an authentic story is the best way to survive in an conversation-rich world.
- Marketers are responsible for the side effects their products cause.
What are your five favorites? What would you add to the list?
