The Spirit of Capitalism

As the gentleman pictured here demonstrates, anyone with a cell phone is open for business.

It’s no longer a question of location, location, location. Whether you’re in China, Brazil, India or Omaha, the barriers to entry are down for anyone with the energy and imagination to sell a product, service or experience people want. Note this interview snippet from the New York Times:

New York Times: Does it feel odd to find yourself lecturing Americans on the joys of capitalism?

Nandan M. Nilekani: You guys told us for so many years to cut out this socialist rubbish and go to free markets. We came to free markets and now you’re telling us, "Stop, don’t come."

— Nandan M. Nilekani, chief executive of Infosys Technologies, in the New York Times.

Mr. Nilekani makes $60,000 a year at a company worth nearly $20 billion.

I don’t understand what this guy’s business is. How do we know he’s conducting business and not just talking to friends or family?

Please excuse the delay in answering your question. I have had this cold that has been inflicting all of us lately. To answer your question . . . we do not know for sure. It is just an assumption due to the fact that the photograph is cropped from the picture of a bazaar in which he is surrounded by a collection of pots that he is obviously selling. He could be talking to "friends and family" . . . or he could be talking to a customer.
