James Hong made a fortune on HOTorNOT.com, a site where users can find out if they’re…well, it’s all in the name.
Now, as Jennifer 8. Lee reported in the New York Times this week, Mr. Hong is finding ways to give back with a .org called Ten Over One Hundred:
You’re a good person. You want to make the world a better place by contributing to charities and non-profits, but you simply don’t know how much to give or where to give it. As a result, sometimes you don’t feel you give enough, sometimes you wonder if you gave too much, and sometimes you don’t give at all.
Mr. Hong and partner Josh Blumenstock invite all comers to join him in pledging to give away ten percent of everything they make over $100,000 each year.
According to Ms. Lee, Ten Over A Hundred may be just the beginning:
The problem with Silicon Valley is that there is no "winning" because there will always be someone who has more than you, Mr. Hong said. The way around the rat race is to give money away instead of accumulating it, he said.To do that, Mr. Hong recently registered the slightly more existential Web domain, AmIHappyorNot.com. He has not decided what he is going to do with it yet.
Giving ten percent…now where have we heard that before?…Is that gross or net? …Can we get a tax receipt for that?…
Just kidding. Well done Mr. Hong.
