Worldview Formation

The Scriptural Roots of Commerce

Last week Dan Wooldridge talked about worldview in a post called My Golden Rule. I think Dan is right about the importance of worldview. In fact, I’m convinced that our most significant offerings at InsideWork are built around helping business people re-form their worldviews around biblical perspectives.

That’s why something called The Scriptural Roots of Commerce — the SRC — is so important around here. I used to think of the SRC as a sophisticated Bible study for business people. I don’t think that anymore. The Scriptural Roots of Commerce is not a “Bible Study” in the traditional sense . . . the SRC launches people on a path that is a “mindshift journey” focused on what Francis Schaeffer called the “self authenticating” power of the scriptures. We built the SRC on the Socratic method of teaching . . . that is . . . one is guided — not led — through to self discovery in a non-directive approach. The SRC is focused on learning, not teaching. That’s not just a play on words. We tried very hard to stay out of the way and let the Bible speak for itself.

There are “layers” of discovery . . . from the basics of theology . . . to apologetics . . . to worldview . . . to topical learning . . . to personal application. . . all woven through The Scriptural Roots of Commerce. Each aspect of the study . . . the “framing question” at the beginning of each section . . . the Bible text presented in the context of the other passages on the same subject within the scriptures . . . the boxed quotes in the margins highlighting people’s wrestling with these issues through history . . . bibliographies in each module that point to tools for further study. . . all these design elements set the SRC apart in the marketplace of ideas.

There’s a new offering in the ever-evolving SRC line: A collection of QuickStart Guides — in printed form, pdf downloads and online — that pursue a streamlined, even more radically learner-centered path through The Scriptural Roots of Commerce. The QuickStart Guides focus on finding immediate applications to spiritual formation in the context of business and marketplace relationships.

All this is backed up by a suite of online helps for individual study, peer to peer learning and group leader preparation to create a dynamic and — as far as I can see, unique — transformative experience.

InsideWork exists today because a group of us got together two or three times a year for eight years to excavate the scriptural roots of work and commerce. The process transformed our lives and business practices by transforming each person’s worldview. That doesn’t mean we see everything the same way all the time. It means we view the world from the same vantage point — a perspective we never had until we walked that path together.

Our invitation to you: Get a colleague or two to join you in a worldview-shaping journey through The Scriptural Roots of Commerce. To make that easier, here’s a free lesson. Try it out and let us know what you think.
