Contempt

Sometimes You Can Just See it Coming

It’s bad enough that Jack Abramoff stole the money. Adding insult to injury the Washington Post reports, he wrote now-public emails referring to his Native American clients as "monkeys," "troglodytes" and "morons."

An ancient proverb warns:

When wickedness comes, so does contempt, and with shame comes disgrace

— Proverbs 18.3 [New International Version]

What we say about colleagues, customers, clients and competitors may or may not predict success. But contempt for anyone foreshadows disgrace. It may not come soon, but the shame will certainly come. It appears Mr. Abramoff is about to take his lumps — along with several others who share his scorn for people made in God’s image. They asked for it.

A fool’s lips bring him strife, and his mouth invites a beating.

— Proverbs 18.6 [New International Version]
