A Picture of Search

A Washington Post story reports that the term most frequently entered in AOL’s search engine between March and May 2006 was the word Google. In fact, three of the top ten search terms include the word Google.

Now that’s market penetration.

An AOL paper titled "A Picture of Search" offers a taxonomy of search categories in which the largest group (15%) are identified as "Other" because they are so diverse as to defy easy classification. This may be another indication of the superiority – or at least the desirability – of search over navigation for internet users.

Which suggests the question: Does navigating around your website depend solely on the navigation tools you provide or can visitors find what they think they’re looking for with a robust search tool?
