Sometimes we get soo sidetracked by the worldly -our mission field is where the Lord places us and He will use us there. Some of the kids in my class have never heard the Gospel- what a fantastic responsibility to be given to plant the seed and maybe to water it.

agree.
If you think about a pastors "job" he essentially has been called to disciple followers. Everyone else is called to bring others to Christ, weather that be through bringing an unbeliever in front of the pastor or simply bringing them to Christ through everyday works. I went to bible college because I believed I was called to be a vocational minister. 5yrs later I am a desk jockey and am making a greater impact than I ever did getting paid by a church. Although, I am preparing to move my family to Latin America to do mission work. The most faithful and effective followers I know do not work for a church or the like. why? Because they accepted to commit to their higher calling as followers.

GREAT POST!! I too have struggled with this my entire life, and recently started to blog about it (www.shrinkingthecamel.com). I needed to wrestle and reconcile the "secular ambition" I had for my career, with the evangelical teachings from my youth. They did not add up. The Blog is like spiritual and career therapy for me. I really appreciate your comments and hope you can check out my blog!

Wonderful thought, Bernard!
Learn to ignore the ignorant preachers.

But most of us, the ordianry Joes, are unhappy, because we miss Him in our daily works. Walking with Him every day is a real challenge.

We are all called to work. And the divine vocational calling is unique to the individual. There is no higher calling then that which God gives us, no matter what the work is. Some are to be arms, others are to be legs and we can choose to offer our work as a spiritual sacrifice. I think it is sad, and bad exegesis, if the text was used to make a wrong case that some work is more noble then others. We always have to examine the motive of the heart. Even work can be an idol or idolized by others.

I agree whole-heartedly. When I graduated from college in 2005, I ended up traveling to Perth, Australia, to do my Discipleship Training School (DTS) with YWAM. I loved it, but I got bored very easily because of my crazy creative mind that had nothing to do. I felt a lot of pressure from everyone there to continue to be a missionary and become "better" than I was because I was so "non-Christian." The experience definitely changed me and since then I've written 3 devotionals on various topics. I still feel like the sectors of non-profits are often glorified. Well, I'm still in the business world effecting people in my way. And loving it.
