Reading articles on the rise in the Wholesale Price Index in the Los Angeles Times and New York Times today reminded me of the Proverb about the “prudent person.” The first half of Proverbs 14:8 says, “The wisdom of the prudent is to give thought to their ways…” (NIV).

Astute business people practice this Biblical notion of prudence… it comes in the form of careful observation … intentional awareness of what’s happening in the marketplace … an attentive reading of the Bible. There’s simply no substitute for paying attention to what the Biblical text says and then finding connections to everything else we read, everything we hear and everything we see in the marketplace.
An article tracking a shift in the economic climate presents a perfect reason to assess my personal and company financials—and be prepared to respond with appropriate course corrections and business innovations. Karl Barth is famous for saying something about how Christians ought to start the day with the Bible in one hand the Times in the other. That strikes me as a prudent balance for the business life.
