Recovering Humility in the Marketplace

Jon Stewart, CNBC + good old-fashioned hubris

We were as shocked as anyone by The Daily Show’s recent skewering of television’s Business News business. But, now that they mention it, there does seem to be the tiniest excess of self-confidence — just here and there — among the Masters of the Universe and those brave women and men who tell their stories each day on the cable TV.

So, thanks to Jon Stewart and, if it’s not gilding the lily, perhaps we might add just these few observations — culled from the ancient wisdom of the Book of Proverbs — on the subject of pride…

To fear the LORD is to hate evil;
I hate pride and arrogance,
evil behavior and perverse speech.
— Proverbs 8:13

When pride comes, then comes disgrace,
but with humility comes wisdom.
— Proverbs 11:2

Where there is strife, there is pride,
but wisdom is found in those who take advice.
— Proverbs 13:10

A fool’s mouth lashes out with pride,
but the lips of the wise protect them.
— Proverbs 14:3

Pride goes before destruction,
a haughty spirit before a fall.
— Proverbs 16:8

Pride brings a person low,
but the lowly in spirit gain honor.
— Proverbs 29:23

And a bonus proverb from Ecclesiastes:

The end of a matter is better than its beginning,
and patience is better than pride.
— Ecclesiastes 7:8
