One of the resources I’ve used to study the life of King David is Eugene Petersen’s book, Leap Over a Wall. Interesting title, taken from Psalm 18:29, “With your help I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall.”
The psalm’s superscription tells us that David wrote this “when the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul.” A few of my favorite verses detailing this rescue are vv. 16-19.
Psalm 18:16 He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters. 17 He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me. 18 They confronted me in the day of my disaster, but the LORD was my support. 19 He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me
It was God’s presence in David’s life and the day to day deliverance David experienced that caused David to proclaim with such confidence, “With your help I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall.” Both are God’s provision. This reminds me of Paul’s words, “I can do everything through him who gives me strength.” (Phil. 4:13)
David said that with his God he could scale a wall. What would you put on your list? What would you say God can do through you?
- I know a person who just put his credit card away for not one, not two, but three straight months. “With God’s help I can break old habits and form new ones.”
- I have just witnessed a couple face false accusations without retaliating ; trusting God to provide justice. “With God’s help I can let God be my defender rather than demanding my rights.”
- I know a couple who have made a commitment to increase the percentage of income they give to kingdom work each year. “With my God I can be a generous giver.”
- Maybe you need to be honest with a close friend about misbehavior that keeps tripping you up. “With my God I can admit my weakness and ask for help.”
- Maybe you have been asked to make a new commitment to serving others. “With God’s help I can allocate time to use my gifts in a new way.”
- Maybe someone needs you to speak the truth in love to them. “With my God I can confront or admonish someone I love.”
- As I write this I am about to move my family from Gilbert, AZ to Austin, TX. “With God’s help we can form new relationships. With my God I can balance being an active father, remain an active owner in our family businesses, and become more active in serving others.”
What does your list look like? What are you willing to undertake with God’s help?
