Search Changes Everything

The Future of Information Organization

This 5½ minute video is a primer on how the architecture and application of information technology changes the ecology of information. That geeky sentence means, search changes everything. We, our customers, suppliers, employees, friends and competitors find things faster and faster.

I got an email the other day titled, Why Google Rules

We were watching the news and they showed a ribbon cutting ceremony. Joanne wondered aloud, "where do they get those giant scissors?" I grabbed the Mac and found an easy dozen vendors of such implements. Of course this raised the question, "How did people find giant scissors before the internet?" Thanks God we don't face that problem today. Google rules!

This is our opportunity and our challenge — CeremonialScissors.com is now head to head with greatbigstuff.com ... and ten more besides.

The video was produced by Michael Wesch and the Digital Ethnography Working Group at Kansas State University.

In our humble opinion — we try not to overstate things around InsideWork — no matter what business they're in, company leaders ignore this at their peril.

  • excellent resource!

One of the bloggers on HighCallingBlogs.com brought this to our attention this morning. Thanks for sharing it! I’m still a little bit stunned, and I’m wondering if there is a good place to discuss the implications of what they’re saying.

Philosophically, I’m completely on board with the changes happening in the way we share information (at least, I’m trying to keep up). But practically speaking, as someone who works in a communications department, I’m still a little fuzzy on how to best focus my efforts.

Great opening question, Mark. We’d love to discuss the implications with you here. As you reflect upon this what do you see as the implications to you in your role in communications? What do you face as your major challenges in focusing your efforts in communications?

I’m sure your questions, insights, and challenges will resonate with our tribe!

What are the rest of you thinking on this subject?
