21: Greed

James 5:1-6
New International Version

Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming upon you.
Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. Your gold and silver are corroded.
Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. Look! The wages you failed to pay the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. You have lived on earth in luxury and self–indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter. You have condemned and murdered innocent men, who were not opposing you.

C S Lewis
The Problem of Pain (p 89), Macmillan, New York, 1962

It is by human avarice or stupidity, not by the churlishness of nature, that we have poverty and overwork.

I am so ashamed to live in the USA. Nothing makes sense to me anymore, nothing. I stopped my car at a street corner in Fredericksburg Va the other day to hand a homeless man some of my lunch I had just bought, and I felt like I should hurry because the car behind me was right on my bumper, as if to say , "Dont you have something better to do than hold us up for this bum "? ….Blessed are the meek, for the meek shall inherit the earth….and the heavens hoepfully

Thanks, Tommy, for sharing that observation. It’s interesting, isn’t it, that Jesus was always stalling the traffic of the religious as well as the self-important, even his disciples to heal a blind man on the side of the road or to offer water to a woman of mixed race and questionable moral history that everyone shunned. I hope that those of us in business who are rushing to meet our deadlines and objectives are not running so fast, focused so much on our own and corporate goals that we don’t hear the voice of God anymore telling us to stop and offer a cup of water, a bite of food, or a helping hand.
